This groundbreaking collaboration establishes a new benchmark for AI Clouds in Africa, de-risking infrastructure investments and positioning South Africa as the continent’s primary hub for Sovereign AI compute.
South African AI neocloud provider Stratos Lab, together with data center operator Digital Parks Africa and ECOBLOX, has announced the launch of an exascale AI cloud, said to be the most powerful in Africa with a peak performance of 7.2 EFLOPS.
South African cloud provider Stratos Lab, AI infrastructure company Ecoblox and data centre operator Digital Parks Africa are partnering to deploy an artificial intelligence (AI) cloud infrastructure platform in South Africa, using more than 400 Nvidia graphic processing units (GPUs).
The companies announced the deployment yesterday, saying it will comprise more than 50 Nvidia B300 HGX servers supplied by Giga Computing, a Gigabyte Group company.
South African start-up Stratos Lab has begun deploying what it and its partners say will be the most powerful AI cloud on the continent, built on Nvidia’s latest shipping B300 “Blackwell Ultra” GPUs and hosted at a data centre in Centurion, north of Johannesburg. The stack will be up within three months.
Announced on Wednesday at the Activate AI conference in Cape Town, the venture pairs Stratos Lab as cloud operator, Dubai-based integrator Ecoblox and carrier-neutral operator Digital Parks Africa (DPA) as initial host. Taiwan’s Giga Computing, a Gigabyte company, is supplying the servers.
Stratos Lab, Ecoblox, and Digital Parks Africa (DPA) announced a project to install the most powerful AI cloud on the continent at DPA’s data centre in Centurion.
“The programme target is $50 million (R797.61 million) over the first two years,” Stratos CEO Chris Mostert told MyBroadband.
“That will fund the 50+ NVIDIA B300 HGX servers from Gigabyte — 400+ GPUs, 7.2 EFLOPS — plus the high-density infrastructure at DPA.”

US $25.2 Billion – that’s the amount of money that private investment has made in Generative Artificial Intelligence in 2023 globally according to Stanford University’s Artificial Intelligence Index. This represents nearly 8X growth from the previous year, and while the numbers for 2024 are not accounted for yet, the explosion of investment fuels the rise of new revenue opportunities.
Traditionally, a telecommunications company focused on network infrastructure, spectrum management, and ensuring reliable communication services. They provided connectivity services—mobile, broadband, and fixed-line communications—with revenue streams largely dependent on subscriptions and usage-based models. But Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are now evolving beyond that traditional role, moving from telco to tech-co.
ECOBLOX, a leader in AI/High-Performance Computing (HPC) data center design and construction, has formed a strategic partnership with Tenstorrent, a next-generation computing company specializing in AI hardware, to support rapid growth in the Middle East and Africa region. This collaboration aims to provide businesses with access to cutting-edge AI accelerator technologies, innovative system integration, and energy-efficient modular data centers (MDCs) tailored for intensive AI workloads such as machine learning training and inference.
